Teacher Training in Music Technology Workshops
The AI Toolkit: Best Practices and Red Lines for Music Educators (2026)
Back by popular demand... these workshops were hugely beneficial to educators in New Zealand and Australia last year in helping to understand and prepare for the risks and benefits that AI poses to Music Education.
It seems that every couple of months there are major advances in technology that could either support or harm the creative process and student development.
Join Duncan Ferguson as he shares the latest tools and research on AI and music education, while also providing real classroom 'best practice' and student work which has been supported and enhanced by AI. Equally importantly, he will share the many scenarios in which AI technology should be avoided, and how to protect students from the harm it may cause in their musical development.
While these workshops return by popular demand, this is not a repeat of last year - expect entirely new tools, fresh research, and updated classroom resources.
Overview of the workshop:
-
Deep-Dive Music Analysis: Moving beyond basic metadata to using AI for harmonic, structural, and stem-splitting analysis (leveraging tools like Ace Studio, Moises and high-fidelity stem separation).
-
Genre-Specific AI Composition: How to ethically integrate tools like Suno Studio and ACE Studio for synth textures and orchestral samples while ensuring student agency and original creative input remain central.
-
How to develop a classroom ethos valuing grit, hard work and creativity over convenience,
-
Integrity & Detection: Navigating the "arms race" of AI-generated music; how to identify AI markers in student submissions and foster a culture of transparent process over final product.
-
Policy & Future-Proofing: Practical frameworks for music departments to build flexible AI policies that protect artistic development and intellectual property.
-
AI-Enhanced Production & Mixing: Streamlining the technical side of the classroom—using AI for intelligent EQ, mixing assistance, and creating high-quality backing tracks for student performances.
-
AI-Native Curriculum Design: Building units of work where AI is a collaborative "session musician" or "tutor" rather than a replacement for the composer.

“It was really useful day! I liked how you went through your junior program year by year and shared with us your resources. It will definitely change the way I approach composition and reinvigorated me during the holidays to make some changes to my units. Thanks very much!”

“The day was well planned out and I loved that you had lots of examples to illustrate and support the course content covered on the day. At the end of the course, I felt confident that my basic knowledge and understanding of how to use music technology in the classroom had improved greatly with the new learning. I feel more equipped to be able to take what I have learnt and use it to support my students’ learning when we focus on using music technology in our Compositions next term. Thank you Duncan for a great day!”

“Duncan's workshop was well structured with practical information and resources that I can use straight away in the classroom. I went away having a clear idea of where to start my Year 9s with musical technology and knowing what programmes and resources I would need to carry them through Year 13. He had just the right balance of sharing information and giving us time to try it out for ourselves. I found this workshop very helpful and would recommend it to anyone secondary music!”
